Chapter Ten

A Surprising Twist of Events

After leaving Mercy in her cottage, he returned home, set the coffee maker for a morning brew and headed to bed. A lot of good it did him. He tossed and turned, then finally got up and paced the living room floor. What in the hell had he done? He’d had sex with her the first night she was on his land. But it was more than that. Holding her in his arms had felt so right. He’d let himself get carried away. What had she discovered about his vardo? Did she guess his secrets? She was a witch after all, one with unknown talents. Well, that wasn’t exactly true. But most were unknown to him. What a frigging mess. His stomach grumbled as he ran his fingers through his hair.

Yanking open the door, he stepped out onto the porch and sucked in cool, fresh air in an attempt to clear his mind.

“Hey boss, having woman troubles?” Jim sauntered up on the step and leaned a shoulder against the wooden post.

He grunted in response. “What the hell are you doing here in the middle of the night?”

“You must have had quite a night. It’s nearly dawn.” Jim chuckled.

A tune played far away over and over getting louder. Blinking at the bright sunlight streaming into her bedroom she blanched. The phone vibrated off the night stand onto the polished hardwood floor. She rolled out of bed and glanced at the screen. Oh boy, it was Hope. This is the fifth call I’ve missed this morning not including the one last night. She touched the screen and held the device away from her ear. Still it didn’t help the ear-splitting voice on the other end of the phone.

“What in the hell are you doing? I’ve been worried sick. What happened last night?”

“Slow down, sis. I had a late night out in the garden. Uh… and experienced unexpected results. That’s all. Relax.” Lying to her sister wasn’t her usual modus operandi, but there was no way she was going to tell Hope what happened. Not until she figured it out herself. Pushing the curtains open, her gaze wandered outside. No sign of him.

“Mercy…Mercy… are you there? I’ll be in Vermont in a few.”

Her sister’s threat snapped her back to the here and now. “No, no, no. Not necessary. I’ll tell you all about it, when I figure it out. The important point is—my magic is back. Trust me. I’ll be in touch in a few days.” A loud crash sounded over her sister’s phone. “You better find out what happened. Love you. Talk to you soon.” No sooner had she disconnected the call there was a knock on her door. Forgetting she was dressed only in her underwear, she dashed to the door and flung it open. There stood the swoon-worthy hunk and his dog.

Her reflection in his mirrored sunglasses had her backing up and slamming the door.

He chuckled. “I’ve seen you naked.”

“Not today.” She leaned against the cool wood for a beat.
